How to Care for Pearls – 8 Top Tips

For about the last decade, I’ve been giving a talk called “Pearls and Princesses” to various ladies’ groups, and it’s always a hit, especially with women of a certain age. It’s a fun reason for them to bring out their pearls from the back of their jewellery boxes and give them a little attention.

However, for many in the younger generations, pearl necklaces often seem outdated. They’re typically handed down, then tucked away and forgotten. When these pearls finally get worn, they can sometimes be a bit disappointing. There are a few reasons for that.

Here are my top 8 tips on how to care for pearls, whether they’re family heirlooms or new treasures:

  1. Let them breathe: Pearls don’t like being shut away in safes, boxes, or drawers. They actually thrive in a more humid atmosphere, though not too wet.
  2. Wipe them down: After wearing your pearls, gently wipe them to remove any perspiration or moisture. Ideally, store them in their original box, especially if it has an inlay to keep the strands from rubbing against each other.
  3. Avoid tangling: Don’t knot your necklace or jumble your pearls with other jewelry like gold or diamonds. These harder materials can easily scratch the delicate surface of your pearls, leading to damage that can’t be undone.
  4. Perfume and hairspray alert: Pearls are sensitive to chemicals, so always put them on last before heading out and take them off first when you return.
  5. Watch out for strong smells: Since cultured pearls are porous, they can absorb odors like nicotine or even cooking smells. So, it’s best to avoid wearing them while frying up anything in the kitchen.
  6. Regular re-stringing: If you wear your pearls often, they’ll need re-stringing every couple of years. Look for signs like irregular spacing between pearls or if the pearls start moving along the thread – these are signs they need some attention.
  7. Knotting matters: Pearls strung with knots between them should be re-strung the same way. Going the un-knotted route might be cheaper, but it can shorten the length of the piece, sometimes making it unwearable. Plus, knotting can be a sign that the pearls aren’t imitation.
  8. Cleaning carefully: Pearls do get dirty, but they require a special cleaner. Harsh chemicals can harm the surface, and you should never dip them in soapy water. The silk thread can get wet and won’t dry out completely, causing it to rot over time.

By following these tips, your pearls can stay beautiful and last for generations to come!

…and finally, now is not the time to be storing your pearl jewellery for posterity. They’re right on trend and in the articles in “Further Reading” below you get some fresh ideas on how to style them.
