Shades of Purple

The first of the colours in the picture above Tyrian, is actually the colour that started it all . It comes from the name of the Tyrian purple dye made from the mucus which is secreted by the spiny dye-murex snail. Originally, this dye came from the Phoenician trading city of Tyre, which is now in Lebanon. A large amount of the mucus yielded only a tiny amount of dye and therefore it was very expensive.
