Taking the plunge into studying something new is exciting, but it can also feel a little overwhelming, especially if it’s been a while since you’ve been in “learning mode.” Whether you’re training in colour analysis for personal interest or to kickstart a career, we’ve got 6 practical tips to make the process smoother and more enjoyable.
TIP 1: Pick the Right Course for You
It’s not just about what you’ll learn – it’s about how you’ll learn. If you’ve got a busy schedule, a self-study or home-study course could be the perfect fit. You can go at your own pace without worrying about strict deadlines (unless you set them yourself!). This flexibility makes it easier to balance studying with work or family commitments.
TIP 2: Plan Ahead and Get Organized
Studying alone can be tough for some people, so getting organized early is key. Set up a study routine and create realistic goals. Not sure where to start? Reach out to your tutor for guidance.
Use tools like a diary, your phone, or a wall planner to schedule your study sessions. You could also try a digital tool, like a Trello board, to track your progress. Block off specific times each week for your coursework and split it between reading, practical work, and assignments.
TIP 3: Take Breaks and Keep It Short
Long study sessions can feel endless, so break things into manageable chunks – maybe 30 minutes at a time – and take a quick breather in between. The Pomodoro Technique, which we talked about in our July newsletter, is a great way to stay focused and productive. At the start and end of each session, do a quick recap of what you’ve read or worked on to reinforce it in your memory.
TIP 4: Find What Works for You
There are plenty of learning techniques out there, so experiment to see what clicks. Some people swear by listening to music with a 60-beats-per-minute tempo to help with memorization. Others find their brains work best early in the morning or late at night when the house is quiet. The key is to create a relaxed environment that suits you, whether that’s complete silence or a playlist in the background.
TIP 5: Make It Stick
Use coloured pens, highlighters, and margin notes to help important information stand out. Don’t just read – start putting what you’ve learned into practice as soon as you can. It might feel awkward at first, but diving in is the best way to build confidence and understanding.
TIP 6: Lean on Your Tutor
Having a tutor in your corner can make a big difference. Share your goals with them, and don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek advice. They’re there to guide you and help you stay on track, so take advantage of their support.
How Long Will It Take?
There’s no set timeline for completing our courses. Some people finish in two months, while others take up to two years if life throws them a curveball. Most students wrap up within six months, especially if they keep up the momentum. If you need to take a break, don’t stress. Just touch base with your tutor when you’re ready to dive back in – they’ll help you get back on track.
Life is full of responsibilities, and sometimes things don’t go as planned. If you hit a bump in the road, reach out to your tutor for advice and encouragement. They’re here to help you succeed!
